I've always thought online backup services are a really bad idea. I guess if you wanted to upload something that was not sensitive and access it from elsewhere they might be useful. However I can not believe people want to trust their personal data to big electronics firms like Hewlett Packard, Mozy, and others. Who knows what they, or some unscrupulous employee of theirs, might do with your data. Can we say Identity Theft???

[...] After less than a year in operation, Hewlett-Packard Co. is pulling the plug on its online backup service, Upline. The company did not supply a reason for doing so other than to say it is continually analyzing product lines and decided to discontinued service at the end of this month. Upline stopped backing up files on February 26 and customers have until March 31, when Upline ceases operations, to download any files that have been backed up using the service. HP should’ve left online backup to the pros (see here).
